✨ Japandi Calm for Your Table — My Product of the Year 2025
As the year comes to a close, I always take a quiet moment in the studio to reflect on the pieces that have meant the most to me — the ones that truly capture what I love about making by hand. This year, one piece stood out with effortless grace. It’s simple, versatile, grounding, and, quite simply, a joy to make.
Meet my Product of the Year for 2025: the Hand-Thrown Small Ceramic Stoneware Serving Board & Cake Stand.
Inspired by Japandi Design
This small raised platter embodies everything I admire about Japandi-style design — the perfect harmony between Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese warmth. Each piece is hand-thrown from coloured stoneware clay, shaped with care and intention, and finished in tones that reflect calm and natural beauty: Dark Blue-Grey and Pale Grey-Blue.
At just 7.5 cm tall and 15.5 cm wide, it’s compact yet quietly striking — the kind of piece that brings peaceful presence to a room without ever asking for attention. Whether styled on an open shelf, a dining table, or a coffee tray, it adds a soft, grounded texture to everyday life.
Purposeful Craft for Everyday Rituals
I believe that craft should be both beautiful and useful — made to be lived with, not just looked at. This little platter perfectly embodies that idea.
It’s wonderful for elevating your latest bake or serving a few slices of cake when friends drop by. It also makes a lovely base for a cheese board, fruit selection, or even a single pastry and a cup of coffee when you want a small moment of calm.
Because it’s dishwasher safe (though not suitable for the microwave), it’s practical as well as beautiful — designed to be part of your everyday rhythm, not a precious object to hide away.
The Joy of Making
One of the reasons this piece holds a special place in my heart is because of how it came to be. I initially had an idea for a tiered stand — a multi-level platter for serving and display. But when I made the smaller version, I realised it had its own charm.
There’s something so satisfying about its proportions: the gentle lift, the smooth curve of the rim, the weight and balance of the base. Making it felt effortless — calm and intuitive. It’s one of those moments as a maker where everything just clicks.
A Piece for the Present Moment
More than anything, this small raised platter represents what I hope my work brings to people: peaceful beauty, simplicity, and connection. It’s a reminder that even in the rush of daily life, there’s value in slowing down — in choosing handmade, in noticing the small rituals that make up our days.
Whether you use it as a centrepiece, a serving board, or simply as an object to enjoy, I hope it brings a sense of quiet joy to your home.
